University of Reading appearing in news media including TV and radio

Global temperatures: Professor Ed Hawkins (Meteorology) is quoted by BBC News in an article on the number of days breaking record temperatures in 2023. The article is republished by Yahoo! News, Rocket News and Radio New Zealand. Comment on the summer’s ‘extraordinary’ heat by Professor Hawkins also features in Express, Middle East Newsreport, Qatar Reporter, Bahrain Bulletin, Arabian Tribune, MEA Newsnet, Time News, KSA Newsline, Arab Messenger, Kuwait Monitor and many other international news outlets.

#PlanetPartners: working with global partners to protect the environment  

  • Professor Richard Allan (Meteorology) and Professor Hannah Cloke (Meteorology/Geography) are quoted in The Times for an article about September’s global heat record.
  • Bloomberg and Yahoo! News feature Professor Ed Hawkins’ (Meteorology) post on X, in reports regarding the Global Surface Air Temperature Anomalies chart, which displays alarming statistics on the surface air temperature for September. Republished by Aol..  
  • Professor Liz Bentley (Meteorology) spoke to BBC Berkshire on the above average weather forecast for October.  
  • Professor Hannah Cloke (Meteorology/Geography) is interviewed by BBC Berkshire on the need to think carefully about how we use water, in order to be able to drink from our rivers again.  
  • Devon Live reports that Professor Jonathan Gregory (Meteorology) will host a Q&A session after his talk on Greening Your Home. Both sessions will be streamed live to Barnstaple Library as part of Libraries Week.  
  • BAA reports that Professor Christopher Scott (Meteorology) and PhD researcher Sarah Watson have developed a model to predict when comet ion tails are likely to be affected by solar wind.  

COVID-19: expert comment on the pandemic 

  • Sound Health and Lasting Wealth republish a quote by Dr Simon Clarke (Biomedical Sciences) from the Daily Mail, on anxieties regarding the earlier than expected rollout of the Covid vaccination this winter.

Health and wellbeing: 

  • BBC News, Nursing Practice, Health Business, Digital Health, and Government Business report that Reading Borough Council, in partnership with Henley Business School, have funded a million-pound trial to gain understanding of the benefits of sensor technology to monitor changes in daily habits that may cause concern. Coverage is also provided by BBC Berkshire, who spoke to Dr Rodrigo Perez-Vega (Henley Business School).

Food and farming: 

  • The Times Literary Supplement (in print) mentions that Reading University Extension College gave permission for women to become agricultural students.
  • BBC York mentions the University of Reading’s revolutionary magnifying systems, used by the botany team.
  • Visiting Fellow, John Giles (Agriculture) writes for Fruit Net regarding the recent reprieve on border checks for fresh fruit and vegetables imported from the EU.

  • The Guardian quotes Dr Rachel Roberts (Institute of Education) on the ‘preposterous’ idea of making both English and Maths compulsory until 18, given the national crisis in teacher recruitment. Republished by Yahoo! News and MSN.
