Pre-Internship checklist
Here are a few quick steps to help you get off to a smooth start:
Confirm the basics
- Start date & time – Double-check when and where you need to be (or log in!)
- Location – Is it remote, in-person, or hybrid? Make sure you know the plan.
Plan your journey or workspace
- In-person? Plan your route — maybe even do a test run the day before.
- Remote? Set up a quiet, professional-looking space and test your Wi-Fi, webcam, and mic.
Know your internship tracker
You’ll get an Internship Tracker via email. Take a look before day one and start filling in your goals. On your first day, chat through it with your employer — it's a great way to kick off your internship.
Do some company stalking
Check out your employer’s website, social media, and maybe even your team on LinkedIn. Re-read your job description too — it'll help you walk in with confidence.
Dress for success
Not sure what to wear? Play it safe and go smart on your first day — you can always dress down later if it’s more casual.
Things You Need to Know
Your internship is a chance to learn, grow, and impress — but also to enjoy yourself. Here are some quick tips to make the most of it:
Make the most of it
- Be curious: Ask questions — no one expects you to know everything.
- Say yes: If you're offered the chance to try something new, go for it.
- Track your wins using your Internship Tracker: Keep notes on your projects, tasks, and achievements — they’ll come in handy for your CV or future interviews.
Be professional
- Show up on time, whether it’s in person or online.
- Be polite, respectful, and friendly — to everyone.
- Check your emails during work hours and take care when replying, especially to managers or clients.
- Finished your task? Don’t just wait — ask what’s next or suggest something useful.
Talk to Your Manager
- Unsure about anything? Ask. Whether it’s dress code, timings, or your first-day schedule, your manager is the best person to help.
- Struggling with something? Let them know early — they’ll want to support you.
- Feeling unwell? Be sure to contact your manager as soon as you can.
Quick tips on pay and practicalities
- You’re employed by the internship provider, not the University.
- You’ll be paid directly by them — pay dates depend on their payroll system.
- If your internship is with an internal University of Reading department, you will be employed through Campus Jobs and paid through Timesheets.
- All internships are paid at least the National Living Wage.
Money-Saving Tips
Internships can be a great experience — but daily costs add up fast. Here’s how to keep your bank balance happy:
Bring your own lunch
Buying lunch every day could cost you £120–£450 over 6 weeks! Pack your own and save the cash — treat yourself to a shop-bought lunch now and then.
Stock up on snacks
Grabbing snacks from the shop every day? That adds up. Buy in bulk at the start of the week — it’s cheaper, and you’ll always have something handy.
Brew your own coffee
Love a morning Starbucks? Us too. But £5 a day quickly adds up. Bring your own tea or coffee and use the office kitchen. Don’t forget your favourite mug!
